Chapter 27: Being kept in the dark
I followed Francine into the kitchen, accompanied by her mate. Questions flooded my mind. I wanted to know why she wanted me to follow her. Was she planning on asking me to cover up her lie to Cindy? I hated the thought of doing that.
Taking notice of the place that I would be staying in, I saw that the light inside was very dim, but still, I could manage to see where I was going. Inside gave me a warm feeling of comfort and made me feel safe. Soon we were in the kitchen. I stood silently, staring at Francine, eager to know why she had brought me there. Also, I had some questions I wanted to ask her.
"This is my mate, Frank," Francine said.
I nodded. Finally, she told me her mate's name.
Suddenly, I found myself asking her about lying to Cindy. I wished she had told her the truth that she was only protecting us from being discovered.
"It was a good thing to do or she would have run off to him and reveal Christian's secret spot," she told me.
I felt a strong pain in my heart when I heard his name. I held my left breast, trying to bear the pain. Francine came close to me and held me. My eyes filled with tears. I hated that I was the one who had caused what had happened to him. Resting my head on Francine's shoulder, I cried. I felt her mate's hand stroking my long red hair, comforting me.
"I wish he had not saved me," I said as I sobbed.
"It was his choice to save you, and he would do so if he was given that choice again," Francine told me.
I removed my head from her shoulder and stared into her eyes while tears continued to streak down my cheeks.
"Christian shares a bond with you. That's why he chose to save you," Francine told me.
Clueless about what she was talking about, I had to ask her.
"No," I heard her mate behind me say, preventing her from telling me why.
I moved away from Francine, spinning around and staring angrily at him. I was so tired of being hidden in the dark.
"Why won't you allow me to understand what she is saying?" I asked him.
"Because it is better if you don't find out, now," he said. "Now, we have to focus on finding your father."
"I'm not interested in finding my stupid rapist father!" I shouted at him.
He looked at me, surprised. All those years my father never came looking for me, and so why would I be interested in finding him?
Francine came toward me, blocking me from seeing her mate's light brown shocked eyes.
"He will save you," Francine said. She never stopped reminding me of that.
I was tired of hearing her say that, like he was some sort of big strong bad wolf that could protect me from everything. I told her I was only interested in saving Christian. Francine looked at me, disappointed, and walked to her mate.
